Jan Biega
COMMUNICATIONS & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Jan attended the Monk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations. A love for food, culture, and travel encouraged him to then pursue a master’s degree in gastronomy from the University of Adelaide. That passion for exploring the cultural significance of food and drink led to a varied career in the alcohol industry. While he continues to have an appreciation for the social and historic context of these products, a growing sense of responsibility and a desire to make a positive impact on his community motivated Jan to join CAUDS in 2024. He now channels his industry experience into initiatives that promote healthier lifestyles, contribute to community well-being, and address the often-overlooked consequences of alcohol consumption.

We are grateful for the advice of the volunteers on this committee who have experienced alcohol use disorder or who are supportive Peers and family members. Their voice will greatly help as we create resources for people wanting to learn more about the disorder, explore treatment options, begin a care journey, or help to support others.
Our Founder: Dr. Jeff Harries
The Canadian Alcohol Use Disorder Society was founded by Dr. Jeff Harries, a family physician who recognized a critical gap in AUD treatments. Driven by a mission to provide better care, he conducted hundreds of presentations across BC and Alberta to thousands of care providers, developed provincial guidelines, published clinical resources, and initiated care pathways for those seeking help.
Jeff sadly passed away from complications of ALS in 2021. We encourage you to watch the short video below and read our full tribute to learn more about his remarkable and trailblazing work.
