An Introduction to Prescribing

Please watch these short films about prescribing for alcohol use disorder. In the first film, created by the Canadian AUD Society, you will hear from colleagues, and about their successes and their recommendations. The second is a short animated film that provides steps for treatment, information on medications, as well as tips for prescribing.

We also recommend a third video created by Interior Health with contribution from the Canadian AUD Society. While referring to some BC-specific resources, this video also gives a quick and helpful overview to prescribing. Watch Here.

More about us and our approach to treating alcohol use disorder

As a non-profit, we advocate for a compassionate, holistic, evidence-based approach to treating Alcohol Use Disorder as a medical condition.

The Canadian AUD Society Approach can include the prescribing of safe, effective and proven medications, usually for a short period of time, in order to:

  • reduce or extinguish cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

  • give people the choice to stop or simply reduce the amount they drink.

  • complement and provide stability for seeking counselling and other psycho-social supports.

The Canadian AUD Society Approach is based on best evidence and leading practices, and we aim to spread information and emerging evidence to clinicians as it becomes available.
