CAUDS Corner Summer 2024

Welcome summer! Over the past few months, we’ve shared information across the province — through clinician education, at conferences and by running workshops in local communities. Now, we’d like to share with you!

Attention All Clinicians: Check out our newly-posted education webinars: AUD Action Series, co-hosted with Health Quality BC.

Visit anytime to watch the videos and to use our new tools. Learn to screen, diagnose and treat people living with alcohol use disorder.

UBC medical student, Samara Reyes, has joined the AUD Action Series team, and will be helping with evaluation and publication. Thank you, Samara!

Thank you Dr. Izabela Szelest, Heather Allen & Hayley Ross

It took much commitment, energy and incredible skill sets to launch the Canadian Alcohol Use Disorder Society and elevate us to where we are now. We were so fortunate to have had Dr. Izabela Szelest and Heather Allen build this foundation and momentum for science, research, communications and so much more.

Izabela is now Interior Health’s Director, Primary Care Transformation Planning & Initiatives, while Heather is a professor in the Department of Communications at Okanagan College.

We would also like to extend a big thank you to Hayley Ross, who joined us as an outstanding research assistant on two separate occasions. We will miss this team’s energy, passion and creativity but know they will keep doing amazing work and continue to create positive change in their new roles.

Community engagement across BC

Read all about the latest communities taking part in our Building AUD Supportive Communities program. Individuals and organizations are coming together to spread awareness about AUD and treatment options and to shift local drinking culture.

Oliver/Osoyoos

On May 8th, we kicked off a year-long community engagement program with a community-wide workshop, co-hosted with Desert Sun Counselling and Resource Centre.

Desert Sun has formed an Action Group that will plan and deliver AUD awareness events and activities in the South Okanagan over the coming year! Learn more or find out how to take part

Campbell River

In June, our community engagement team visited Campbell River for their kick-off event. We are thrilled to be working with the Campbell River Community Foundation, which will be convening an Action Group to plan and deliver awareness activities in their region. Prince George

Just days later, we were delighted to bring our travelling community engagement road show to Prince George. Thanks to our partners, the Prince George Community Foundation, who helped host their local workshop and will convene an Action Group to continue work throughout the year. Coming Soon!

Watch for the Building AUD Supportive Communities program in Kamloops in September.

And, if you happen to be in Princeton on Aug. 9th drop by their town square for a second annual community-wide mocktail party celebrating the continuation of their work promoting awareness and creating positive shifts in local drinking culture.
